3 unexpected things I have discovered while freelancing

There is a lot more to this freelancing game than one would realize. Subtle nuances that are only found once you are knee deep in it for a few years. As someone who has been doing so consistently for the past 3 years, here are 3 things that I have discovered along the way that you might find unexpected about freelancing.

3. You meet an insane amount of people

It usually takes a while before someone will trust you enough with their project and money to hire you. A couple of meetings over coffee and a few Zoom calls might be in order to close the deal.

Because most people aren’t just looking for a professional. They are looking for someone that they can genuinely trust.

Which means that not every potential client will sign on the dotted line. Not because you aren’t ‘trustworthy’ (because you are), but because people are picky when it comes to their financial situations.

With looming bills on the horizon, you will need to have a continuous queue of potential clients lined up. Which means alot of emails, phone calls, coffee shop meetings, lunches and in-house visits (though rare).

It’s genuinely nice to meet new people and to learn about their business and professional goals. But it can be exhausting…
